I was born in Australia to a remarkable family. My mum, Cherry, was a Hiroshima survivor, and my dad was an Aussie soldier. Against incredible odds, they built a life together, quietly shaping history and teaching resilience, courage, and love along the way.
Inspired by my mum’s simple, thoughtful home cooking, I became a chef myself. Over the decades, I’ve learned what really makes cooking enjoyable, approachable, and delicious and I want to share that with you.
Now, at 65, I’m stepping further into that story. I travelled to Hiroshima with my sisters to honour our parents’ legacy, and it reminded me that cooking can be more than a meal. It can be connection, tradition, and meaning.
Underground Chef is my way of passing that on. It’s a place for stories, skills, tools, and inspiration. It is a bridge between my Japanese roots and Australian life, and a way to help you cook with confidence and joy.
Thank you for being here and joining me on this journey.
